This Month's Profile...

George Merker

George Merker is one of the newest members of our Church, having attended since last fall and having joined us in December.

He is an attorney, and operates as Merker Law Offices in Poulsbo, where he practices with North Kitsap Law Offices at 219 Moe Street, and on Bainbridge Island and in Seattle.

He was born in Harvey, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, and grew up down-state near Bloomington.  He graduated from Illinois State University, and then received an MBA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his JD from the University of Illinois School of Law in Champaign.

He is single, and has a 19-year-old daughter, Emily, who went to school on Bainbridge Island and now works in Seattle.

George has always been interested in politics, and was an active member of the Independent Voters of Illinois, the state ADA Chapter; he was an organizer for George McGovern and Adlai Stevenson, and ran several campaigns in King County.

Now an active member of the Washington State Bar, George is admitted before the federal Western and Eastern District Courts of Washington and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the US Supreme Court.  George is also an active member of the Poulsbo and Kitsap County communities.  He has over 15 years' experience doing wills and probates.

A former Chair of the King County Bar Labor and Employment Law Section, and Chair of the 1999 Pacific Coast Labor and Employment Law Conference, and a member of the Estate Planning Council of Seattle, George has focused his practice in areas like real estate, business, family law, probate, and estate planning.  He does not practice in contingent bodily injury claims (i.e., car accidents), product liability, or intellectual property issues.

George is glad to help people find good counsel and encourages people to call him for referrals.  He makes a point of never charging for simply discussing the nature of problems prior to an agreement to do legal work.

He likes the church because he feels he has met so many interesting people here.  He has really enjoyed our Bible education classes, is a member of the Transformational Inquiry group, and feels he has learned a lot about the Bible and Christian doctrine since being here.  He enjoys a liberal approach to religion in keeping with his views.  He was active in the Unitarian Church in Bellevue and on Bainbridge Island before arriving here.  Over time, George hopes to repay the many kindnesses he has received here.
