SarinaThis Month's Profile...

Sarina

by Hilda Maston

New member Sarina (she uses only one name) was born in New York. She left school when she was 16 years old and obtained a job at the phone company as a long distance operator. Her father was very ill so she became the family breadwinner at that early age.

After she grew up a bit, she decided that she had had enough of the big city and wanted to live in a more country place, so she moved near San Diego which still had some suburban regions left. She couldn’t find a job in San Diego so she moved to Los Angeles, where she found work as the obituary columnist for the Los Angeles Herald.

Her next job was with United Airlines.  She worked for them for 27 years, until she retired. As she put it, somewhere in that time frame she got married, had a daughter, and divorced her husband.

While working for United she had access to Airline passes, so she took her mother and daughter to Seattle to see the King Tut Exhibit. They had a little time before the exhibit opened, so they decided to take a ferry ride. When the ferry pulled in to Bainbridge, she fell in love with the place. She went back to California, got United to transfer her here, sold her house, and moved herself and her daughter to Bainbridge Island where she lived for many years.

After that, she decided that Bainbridge had lost some of its appeal, so she moved to Suquamish, wanting to live in a smaller town.

While visiting her daughter on Bainbridge, she read a letter to the editor in the Bainbridge Herald that was written by Tom Thresher. Sarina decided that she liked the way this minister thought and decided that she wanted to hear more of what he had to say.

She attended services a few times and reports that she loves the church, loves the friendly congregation, and loves cooking soup for the Soup and Something Simple Sundays. She is a new member of the deaconate and has already attended a meeting.

By the way, she added yet another job to her resume. When she found out that her pension from United was not what she expected, she walked into the Post Office at Rolling Bay, and applied for and got a job as a postal clerk -- adding another job to the career of the lady with one name.

A warm welcome to new member Sarina!
