More Bits & Pieces

Holiday Baskets

The holiday season is fast approaching, bringing with it the gathering of families and friends for the holiday feasts.  For some families in our community, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just two more days without enough food on the table.  For many families in our area, the need for food is even greater this year than most.

Our church has provided holiday baskets to needy families for many years. Families register at Fishline in Poulsbo.  Fishline provides us with a list of families and family size.  We decide what food goes in the boxes and how to set the boxes up for each family on the list.  So its time to start thinking about and working on our tradition of giving Holiday Food Baskets to the needy in our community.

We plan to collect a special Holiday Food offerings in November and December.  These funds will be used to purchase perishable food from the local markets and to supplement non-perishable food that is donated.  Also a drive for non-perishable foods, including dry and canned foods will be collected before Thanksgiving and before Christmas.

Normally, we feed 30-50 families on each holiday.  Each of the baskets will contain enough food for several days after the holiday.  This amounts to $20-$45 per basket, depending on family size which varies from one to 10 members.  Please put “For Holiday Baskets” on your checks and please give what you can to the food drive and the special holiday offering.

We are providing this information to give each of us a chance to get that extra contribution figured into our budget.  We are a caring and concerned congregation and thinking of others is a tradition and mission of our church.

The following is a list of non-perishable items needed for the baskets:

Canned goods
Dry goods
Fruits and vegetables
Dressing mix, pastas, macaroni and cheese
Soups and stews
Hamburger Helper / Tuna Helper
Tomato sauce
Tuna
Rice-A-Roni
Peanut butter, jelly/jam

THANK YOU for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
