Life
Influences...
Judy &
Gary Hunt
by Johnnie Ulmer
There
are so many people in the church who have influenced my
spiritual journey over the past 54 years and I don't
want to leave anyone out. I thank God for everyone of
them. I'm not old but will be 92 in November...
I'm the matriarch, you know.
I joined
the church in 1951 and, 6 weeks later, I was the
secretary and treasurer and over the years have been
involved in everything. However, I did get in trouble
when I was providing the flowers for the sanctuary one
time... Since I didn't have flowers in my own
garden, I went up and down the sides of the highway and
picked wildflowers.... including sword fern and Scotch
broom. Well, someone from the congregation let me know
that Scotch broom is a weed!! The Rev. Dr. Ohrenstein
overheard the remark and, in his sermon, said "Thanks
Mrs. Ulmer for gathering God's beautiful flowers".
Rev. Dr.
Ohrenstein was very influential in my life and ordered
pamphlets from England and other helpful things for me
to read. I loved Rev. Dr. Cooley and kept track of him
for many years. Norm Stuart was very important to me of
course and I loved Dick Kroll's 'TLC' class ... he
introduced me to things I never dreamed about. Of
course, I don't want to forget my dear friends, who have
already been written about in this column, Barbara
Stuart and Virginia Johnson.
At this point in my life, Judy and Gary
Hunt are very important to me.
They're better than family.... Family can
always say "no," but Judy and Gary never turn me
down. They're always there to help me out on a regular
basis, and I don't know what I would do without them.
Judy comes over every week and helps me
with my bath and straightens up the house and tends to
my garden. She even cooks for me. I love her
brownies! Gary takes me shopping, to doctor
appointments, to TAGS, and to get my hair done.
They even take me to the movies...
I've already seen "March of the Penguins" twice!
They're so good to take me places since I can't drive
anymore. Two weeks ago, they took me to a family
reunion. They're just wonderful people and I'm so
thankful they're in my life.
So there's no "one" person who's
responsible for being most influential in my life...
except, I guess, God is.
