Bev
Staaden
by
Hilda Maston
Did you know that Bev Staaden used to be
a gypsy? Not by heritage, of course, but because she
lived in so many places before she settled happily in
Poulsbo.
She started in Montevideo, Minnesota,
where she was born. After some time her family moved to
Bremerton, where Bev attended Olympic View Elementary
and then Vancouver High School in Vancouver, Washington.
Then she was off to Clark University and Washington
State. She continued her gypsy ways by also attending
the University of Hawaii.
With all her teaching certificates in
hand, she began a teaching career that spanned 35 years,
including a stint in Yuba City, California, where she
was a teacher’s mentor and teacher for 8 years.
Bev was married in 1959 and adopted two
children, Steven and Stacy. Between them they have given
her three grandchildren, Corbin (16), Samantha (13), and
Caleb (6). She says she doesn’t see them often enough
because they live in Chehalis.
Divorced after 28 years of marriage, Bev
moved to Poulsbo because she has a brother who lives
here. She taught for a while at North Kitsap Elementary
Schools. After retiring from teaching, she began
working part-time at the Book Stop bookstore in downtown
Poulsbo. She feels a bookstore is a great place for an
avid reader to work.
Bev joined the church in 1997 and has
been an active member ever since. Currently, she attends
the Women’s Book Group, serves on the Called to Care
team, in part of the Personnel Committee, knits prayer
shawls, sometimes hosts the coffee hour, and serves as
an usher when needed.
She has many hobbies as well. She loves
to read, and plays pinochle, rummy, and dominoes. She
enjoys working in the yard of her house, which she has
lived in for 8 years now. She says she has finally put
down roots and is very happy about it.
