Mel Haug
Who is the man in
the Norwegian sweater?
That’s
Mel Haug, a man of many interests.
Mel is a
native Washingtonian. He was born in Seattle, and
lived and went to school in Ballard. He attended
the University of Washington, where he obtained a
commercial art degree. Right out of school he
joined the army via the Reserve Officer Training Corps
(ROTC).
When his
army career was over, Mel went back to school and earned
his teaching certificate. He taught school in
Seattle (mostly junior high) for 22 years. After
that he had to resign because of health issues. When he
regained his health he worked as a fisherman for about 6
years.
In 1985, Mel moved to Indianola to be close to his
daughter and grandkids.
In 1987, he and his wife Carol joined our church and
were immediately active in many church activities.
Carol died recently, and Mel has continued to serve the
church in many capacities.
He ha been a trustee, belonged to the Community
Concerns, Called to Care, and is now on the Diaconate
and Worship committee. He has been a member of the choir
for many years.
Along with Barbara Stuart, Mel worked on a citizen’s
committee with the S’Klallam tribe where they worked on
racial concerns. One of the aims of the committee was to
help keep children in school.
Even
with all of this, Mel has time for hobbies. He is
interested in wood carving. He sings with two
choruses -- one at Sons of Norway and one at Indianola.
He is currently working on painting in water colors.
Mel has had three children, Melinda, Karl, and Joanna.
Among them they have provided Mel with 6 grandchildren:
Grace, Lowell, Lea, Brian, Spencer, and Jeff. Mel
is a proud great-grandfather to a two-year-old charmer
named Camus, who is the apple of Mel’s eye.
