Confirmation
Retreats
Do you remember your confirmation
classes? My oldest daughter, Leah, does. She
remembers sitting at a table once a week, doing
assignments in a workbook. She remembers learning
way more about the House of Bishops in the Episcopal
church than she did about her own personal faith.
She also remembers being glad when it was over.
Instead of classes, our youth in
eighth grade, and those older youth who haven't been
confirmed, have the opportunity to begin a focused faith
journey. We will go on a series of four retreats
beginning in November. The retreats will take us
to places where we will hike, canoe, camp, sing around
the campfire, and experience other faith communities.
We will visit other UCC churches as well. More
importantly, the confirmands will have the opportunity
to wonder, ask questions, doubt, and then doubt their
doubts. We will talk about God stuff and learn
what we believe as well as what we don't believe.
Sound more interesting than that table
and workbook? The other leaders, Kelly Raber, Leah
Floyd, and I will be sending out letters inviting you
and your young people to an informational meeting after
worship on October 17th. At that meeting, we will
give you the dates of all four retreats and begin to
answer your questions. In the meantime, please
don't hesitate to talk with one of us about your
questions or concerns.
In peace,
